News for the week of 16-Jul-2012
by Carol Banks Weber
Daniel Goddard (Cane) theorized as to why Lily and Cane – Lane – are so popular with fans. It’s all about romance. They have it in spades. Lane’s special, romantic appeal in soaps is kind of unusual. Most soap supercouples survive on constant angst. That’s the opposite of Lane, who represent perhaps a broader-scale of romantic thirst. “You can have trials and tribulations in life and then you tune in to the show because you want to have something that is romantic, stable and assuring. There’s an escapist feel to it. You don’t want to watch the news because of all the horror stories. I have zero interest in watching the news because it’s always doom and gloom. I don’t want that. I like to escape. That’s why movies are so popular. It may not be the actual movie or story, it’s the escapism involved. You’re leaving your life to go into a dark room with a mass of people with a common mindset and are escaping for an hour and a half to two hours. You want to leave things behind for a bit. That’s what daytime is. It’s escapism. You need to let people escape.” Goddard spoke to TV Watercooler’s Jeevan Brar for the July 6th article to, in part, promote his new Aquaswiss watch line. Goddard launched Aquaswiss’ new watch line campaign on The Shopping Channel June 23. The Aquaswiss connection happened as a result of becoming inspired by co-star Tracey E. Bregman’s (Lauren) jewelry line, also on the Shopping Channel. She was showing off her jewelry line at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. “I went on camera to speak about some of her pieces and they sold out,” Goddard explained. “What’s interesting about Tracey’s jewelry is that it’s about romance, joy and excitement. I think it’s a good analogy for daytime because when you want to wear jewelry, you want to feel glamorous and want to escape.” The Shopping Channel followed up with Goddard, asking if he’d like to front his own line. His interest in the right vehicle led him to Aquaswiss. “We discussed fitness and watches, and they told me about a few watch companies. I met with the guys at Aquaswiss and really liked their product. They are good and affordable watches. I really like what they’re doing and told them that I’d like to be a part of this.”
Three-time Emmy winner Jennifer Landon (Heather; ex-Gwen, ATWT) didn’t take long to settle into her role as a recast. Her ADA Heather is warmer yet tougher than the previous version (sorry, Eden Riegel/ex-Bianca, AMC), and a whole lot more casual and at ease with her new cast mates, especially Doug Davidson (Paul), Jeff Branson (Ronan), and Jessica Collins (Avery). There was a time, though, right after ATWT, when Landon needed to take an acting break. She very nearly went into the Peace Corps. She was in the midst of filling out forms when the theater beckoned, a theater company in particular. Lucky for us, she’s back and better than ever as Paul’s feisty lawyer daughter willing to go that extra mile for him. “The more I get to know Heather, she’s an awesome character to play. I’m really excited and can’t wait to see what’s in store for her.” A lot of that can be credited back to the actress in charge. –Soap Opera Digest, “Routine Landon” by Devin Owens, July 9, 2012
Marcy Rylan (Abby) doesn’t let having two sons, one a newborn, cramp her socially active lifestyle. She told Soap Opera Digest (July 9) she and her boyfriend Don continue to entertain friends in their home, and work around their children’s schedule, even sleep. “Everyone is wonderful with them and it’s noisy and the dogs bark like crazy and our kids sleep through it all,” Rylan described. “I had been given very good advice once that if you keep a loud house, the kids will sleep through anything, so ours is not a quiet house.” A side benefit: she thinks that maybe her friends will get inspired to have children too, seeing as it’s so fun (and doable) with her, her boyfriend, and their kids.
Brett Butler (Grace Under Fire) comes back as Ricky’s former neighbor Beth, July 26-27. She’ll be asked to help out another character regarding Paul’s case.

Cut the tiddly winks with the nostalgic toy gifts and nickname drops. Admit Cane’s presumed-dead sister survived and is trying to reach out. And… just give Doug Davidson (Paul) an Emmy now.
Props to more relief from the endless procedural drama last week when stud magnets Nick, Neil, and Sarge played some hoop, two of them shirtless. Why can’t we have more lighthearted, sexy moments like this? Somebody in charge pay attention to Daniel Goddard (Cane), who is a firm believer in soaps as escapism, not torture.
