News for the week of 17-Sep-2012
by Carol Banks Weber
Mere days after Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps’ damage-control interview with TV Guide’s Michael Logan, where she projected sweetness and light, the cast cutting commenced. Genie Francis (Genevieve), Debbi Morgan (Harmony), and Marcy Rylan (Abby) were dropped from the cast. Julia Pace Mitchell (Sofia) was demoted from contract to recurring. Reasons were reportedly due to the budget. Morgan tweeted to her fans the news before the soap media did: “To all my twitter fans wanted to B the first to tell you the new regime has let me go from Y&R. Will tape my last show Oct. 5th & I move on!” While Morgan and Rylan tweeted positive notices of their goodbyes, Mitchell’s was more convincing. (But then, she’s still with the show.) “I'm so happy to be here. Every time I come to work, I'm excited to see Jeanne [Cooper, Katherine] and Stephen [Nichols, Tucker] work. This show has changed my whole life. It's really cool. These are some of the hardest working actors in show business.” The actress also took some time to introduce her new business venture, a hair care company. “It's a jojoba oil-based company. I'm doing workshops in Dayton so people can go to www.JuliaPaceMitchell.com to learn about acting, hair care and what it takes to work in this business!”
New Executive Producer Jill Farren Phelps campaigned in the September 24th Soap Opera Digest that she’s harmless, hardworking, and well-intentioned—whichever show she helms, and she’s helmed many in her illustrious career. “What we do is very difficult, so I think it's important to have a sense of humor. I think if you ask the people with whom I've worked, they'll tell you that I bring a sense of family to where I go.”
James Avery (Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, Grey’s Anatomy) was on-set last Friday to film scenes kicking off on October 12.

The firings will continue. Not many will be spared, save for the very core, very popular Y&R icons, which will be used as the anchor to launch the new, hot youth brand, as previously rumored.
Some, like the Soap Whisperer, believe the mass firings will continue until TPTB (JFP) have enough money to afford GH’s outgoing lead actor Steve Burton (Jason), also as previously rumored. “Y&R clearing out refugees from other shows to put it mildly. Have to make room for Burton's contract? HMMMMM… Y&R Wasting no time w/the cuts... More to come!!! You won't believe how many by the time it is done… It will seem as if Y&R has a revolving door for the next few months! Things should settle down by January-February.”
Jennifer Landon (Heather) may also be leaving the show, and not of her own volition, according to Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens, who posted September 15 what sources have told him.
That’s not all. Christel Khalil (Lily) too?
There have been rumors over at GH that Steve Burton (Jason), its resident cash cow actor, left not just to retire but due to a bad re-negotiation process. Furthermore, with Burton as an alleged FOJ (Friend of Jill [Farren Phelps, EP])…
Billy Miller (Billy) and Michael Graziadei (Daniel) may opt out of renegotiating their impending-due contracts, according to insiders for Daytime Confidential’s Jamey Giddens. Their wanting to leave has nothing to do with the new regime, supposedly, but to broaden their already overbooked horizons. “These guys made their decisions to leave before Jill [Farren Phelps] and Josh [Griffith] came onboard. This isn't part of the bloodbath,” said the insider.
Who’s Cooper Harris (ex-Lila, ATWT)? This Southern belle is an actress who will soon join Y&R in a new and as-yet unnamed role. Maybe Harris’ mysterious character is Cane’s presumed-dead sister? She’s rumored to be someone in the middle of Cane and Lily’s life all of a sudden.
