News for the week of 24-Feb-2014
by Carol Banks Weber
Despite showing up for the occasional parties as a warm body only, Tatyana Ali (Roxanne) won another NAACP Image Award February 21. (I guess winners only have to show up to win.) Kristoff St. John (Neil) won as outstanding actor in daytime too, but at least he’s a core character.
Two of the Y&R actresses who should’ve earned more NAACP Image recognition discussed racism in Hollywood with The Insider’s Kevin Frazier days before the February 22nd NAACP Image Awards ceremony. Christel Khalil (Lily) acknowledged it can be hard to watch white actress friends get the roles over her. Angell Conwell (Leslie) also had to fight her way out of that stereotypical black diva box.
Major B&B crossovers for Y&R’s big spring collection April 11-16, including Jacob Young (Rick). Even Jill Larson (ex-Opal, AMC) comes on board as a guest star, playing a stressed stage manager. Chelsea Lawson for Jabot’s fashion show will take place at Lily’s renovated Genoa City Athletic Club. Expect to see plenty of catfights involving Chelsea, Chloe, Lily, and Hilary.
Hilary and Neil get to play The Price Is Right in the March 26th show in another cross-over when she indicates that as a wish.
The Superbowl champion Seattle Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson makes a guest appearance March 13. Robinson is a total Y&R fan. Most athletes are. Producers took stock of his fandom when bringing him on. Robinson appears with the big man himself, Victor Newman, played by Eric Braeden, a huge sports fan (although not necessarily for the Seahawks).
Gossip for the week of 24-Feb-2014

JFP brought the fire of her former action-adventure hero GH to Y&R’s straitlaced gala last week with little special effect. Besides heightening the lovely devotion of Cane to Lily, and flexing Tyler’s heroic inclinations, all the Womack lockdown did was shoot the cast and crew with a dose of very cheap adrenaline. This show continues to drag with lackluster performances, a bloated cast, and staggeringly choppy dialogue (see GH Gossip for how to do it right) in the automated, lifeless exchanges. These characters talk at each other by rote, not truly engage and showcase.
