News for the week of 26-Oct-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Kate Linder (Esther) hosts her annual Opportuniteas For Independence High Tea fundraiser for March of Dimes Canada on December 6, with Y&R stars Christian LeBlanc (Michael) as the emcee, Camryn Grimes (Mariah), Robert Adamson (Noah), and Melissa Ordway (Abby). Her fourth annual high tea takes place at Toronto’s Fairmont Royal York, 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a Q&A, autograph session, auction, raffle, and gift bags.

Toronto’s not Hawaii, but Grimes is happy to help a good cause for her cast mate, Linder. Grimes herself would love to figure out a way to live part of the year in Hawaii (who wouldn’t?). She was able to visit paradise with her brother recently this summer. “It’s my adventure place, where literally every day is filled with hiking and exploring,” she said in the November 2, 2015 issue of CBS Soaps In Depth. “… Someday I’d love to have a home there, and fill it with kayaks and paddle boards and off-roading cars.”

Before Melissa Claire Egan (Chelsea) came over to Y&R, she played quite a psycho on AMC. As the mentally deranged Annie, she also stabbed the great Erica Kane in the heat of a major psychosis. Shooting that scene proved nerve-wracking for Egan, because she knew she would be public enemy #1 with fans for daring to go after Erica, the soap’s best-known legacy character. But she approached her AMC character the way she has with her current Y&R one: with humanity. “… I think the key with these characters, especially in a soap opera, is being able to show vulnerability. Even if your character is the toughest cookie on the planet, you need to show you have insecurities… It’s about creating layers. People can relate to that. As human beings, we have compassion for people who don’t always win!” –CBS Soaps In Depth, November 2, 2015

Scott Elrod’s (Joe) other job involves housing and maintaining people’s fancy cars. He runs a “vehicle storage and management company, where we take care of people’s collections of vehicles. It’s for folks who have more cars than car spaces.” Only in L.A. (well, a little outside the big city). –CBS Soaps In Depth, November 2, 2015

Stacy Haiduk (Patty) is ready to insert some more humane qualities to her nutty character, who recently showed up at a mental facility Sharon checked into. While every actress playing a heroine wants to go bad, Haiduk would like a little goodness to Patty without giving up the unpredictability of the lunacy. “You’d still have Patty there, whether she’s sane or not,” the actress said in a November 2, 2015 interview with Julie McElwain of Soaps In Depth. “You’d just have to fine-tune the character in different ways. You play the moment. You can only plan so much as an actor, but I don’t think Patty would have to lose her uniqueness.”

Haiduk uses Jessica Lange in the award-winning movie Frances as an acting role model to play Patty. Lange played an outspoken, controversial 1940s actress named Frances Farmer who wound up being institutionalized and allegedly lobotomized for her beliefs. “She was never crazy — she was just powerful. They couldn’t handle her independence or passion for acting. It was pretty sad. Powerful women in those days were scary, I guess,” Haiduk mused. –CBS Soaps In Depth, November 2, 2015

Lachlan Buchanan (Kyle) went from contract to recurring, as reported by SOD online October 26.

Did you watch last week as the anniversary of Delia’s death dredged up more emotional pain for those who survived her? Outstanding acting from Victoria’s Amelia Heinle especially. Heinle dug in and dug out the truth of that fictional moment from an actor recast after the Emmy-winning scenes of Delia’s actual death in 2013. Heinle and Burgess Jenkins (Billy) gave the anniversary of this beloved child’s death a scary reality that fans felt down to the core — surprising coming from head writer Charles Pratt Jr., who tends to reel in emotion for explosive, obscene plot points.
