News for the week of 29-Sep-2014

by Carol Banks Weber

Gina Tognoni (Kelly) tried to explain her process for getting into Phyllis’ tough, complicated character. Only the bravest and deepest actress can do what Tognoni is currently doing. She talked to Soap Opera Network’s Kambra Clifford for the September 25th feature. Here’s an excerpt: “I have to ask that question in order to keep her going: ‘What is it, what is it? Let’s get in there.’ Because this is a process of reinventing her in some way. I have to put my arms around it, I have to put my fingerprints on it, and the way in which you do that is by digging deep and being unafraid of just going for it. And there are certain scenes that I get to really do that on, and then there are scenes when I can be a little bit more subtle. So it’s about driving the scenes every day. You have to remember to do that, not to sit back and to really go for it.” She said she couldn’t do it without the superlative Y&R actors she gets to work with, Peter Bergman (Jack) at the top of the list, along with Joshua Morrow (Nick), and Sharon Case (Sharon).

Y&R bosses put Matthew Atkinson (Austin; Parenthood) on contract recently.

Scott Elrod (Joe Clark; Men In Trees) receives the red carpet treatment (his own promo) from TPTB. He’ll raise the stakes for Avery and Dylan, starting October 1.

Jaymes Vaughan (Chippendales) appears this week at Sharon’s racy bachelorette party. Vaughan told Soap Opera Network’s Kambra Clifford recently that strip-dancing for the bachelorette party was easy to do, since he does it as his job in Vegas. But doing it for the soap was made even more fun, he explained, thanks to veteran star Sharon Case (Sharon). “She has this smile about her, she’s very endearing, very welcoming, very warm,” Vaughan said. “She’s really cool. And honestly, within like two minutes of meeting her, I felt like I knew her, and I thought, ‘Ok, we’re going to be dancing together. Let’s go!’” Vaughan is also an OK! TV correspondent with a theater background, which enabled him to go with the flow on the fast-paced soap opera set. He couldn’t say enough about the professionalism and kindness of the Y&R cast, either. They’re able to more than keep up with the breakneck speed of filming with barely any rehearsal and zero redos. “I was amazed with … how nice everybody was! Everybody came up to say hey to you when you got on set, everybody was just so welcoming. And then all of a sudden, they switch, and if somebody is mad at somebody [in a scene], they’re mad at each other so quick. They just slip right into character. But they were great. They work their butts off. Soap opera actors do get a bad rap sometimes, but I’m like, ‘Mmmm, nope. They pretty much throw it down harder than anybody else in the acting world.’”

Seems fans are rallying for a breakthrough love story between Kevin and Det. Mark Harding in social media. Using the hashtag #Harder as the potential supercouple moniker, fans encourage TPTB to go there, taking advantage of Greg Rikaart and Chris L. McKenna’s obvious chemistry.
