News for the week of 29-Sep-2015

by Carol Banks Weber

Despite the criticism against the new regime of Charles Pratt/Jill Farren Phelps, ratings have never been better, or higher. Based on the 2014-2015 Nielsens, Y&R’s ratings are the best since 2009-2010, and are up one percent from last season. This c/o Daytime Confidential’s report.

Daniel Goddard (Cane) broke his left elbow during a fight scene on September 18 he performed himself. Goddard told fans about it on Facebook, two days later. The fight scene hasn’t yet aired. The actor wasn’t able to have the elbow fixed right away because of inflammation. “The break is still bleeding out as you can see by the color of my fingers... but I'm at Y&R today filming because we have so much to do for our huge November sweeps storylines! I have surgery scheduled for tomorrow morning where they will screw and wire my elbow back together.”

Michael E. Knight (Simon Neville; ex-Tad, AMC) provided an entertaining, real interview thanks to Michael Logan’s easy way with words in a September 25th-posted article for TV Insider. Knight appears for the first time as a neurologist dealing with Neil, October 15. The role allows for the actor to play all the accidental wacky trips he’s known for. It’s been awhile since Knight’s been back in daytime since AMC was canceled.

At first, he said he felt like the new kid walking onto the studio set of Y&R, but then he saw his friend Kristoff St. John (Neil), and all was well. He is also reunited with several other friends from AMC, including Peter Bergman (Jack) and head writer Charles Pratt Jr.

Logan went there by asking Knight whether Pratt had a hand in sinking AMC’s ship. Nope, Knight kind of pointed to former ABC Daytime president Brian Frons for that. “I don’t think Chuck was given a fair shot at AMC. I suspect he got his marching orders from [former ABC Daytime chief] Brian Frons, who only wanted the under 35 audience. Chuck had to turn AMC, which was moving very slowly, into a show that demanded your full attention, not something you could half-watch while you were making a ham sandwich. He really had to mix it up. But he was only there for what, seven months? I think he’s a funny, progressive guy. And hey, Y&R is doing pretty well under him!”

Knight said he benefitted from Pratt’s hand at AMC, watching Tad the family man turn into a question mark overnight. “I can’t complain about the guy! Tad had been stuck in a rut for five years and had been married to Dixie (Cady McClain) two or three times when Chuck came along. He said, ‘I keep hearing about Tad the Cad, but where is he? You’re Father Knows Best. All that’s missing is a sweater and pipe. I want to break you out of this.’ So he had Tad get shot in the head and develop a personality disorder, and after that the sky was the limit.”

Michael Logan also asked Michael E. Knight about his lack of social media presence, as well as the Prospect Park disaster.

Greg Rikaart (Kevin) has been talking about his character coming out of the closet for awhile now. He might finally get that gay storyline, which could bring back his wonderfully crazy mother Gloria.
