Blood on the wedding dress
The mirror

Sonny ended his deal with Karpov, and he warned Karpov that he did not want to be associated with him.

The next two episodes delved deeper into Kate’s life and the writing introduced nuances that would be defining in terms of what would emerge in the next few months of story.

Sonny saw Kate in her reception wedding dress and the following dialogue was spoken:

Sonny: “you look so gorgeous in this magnificent dress that I don’t know how the wedding dress is gonna compare.”

Kate: “well, it’s different. It’s more formal.”

Sonny: “so it’s not like a bunch of pillows exploding?”

Kate: “oh what are you saying? You are saying I wouldn’t look good with a bunch of pillows exploding?”

Sonny: “no I say you look good in anything. But you would even look better with nothing.”

And then they embraced.

[When the scenes of Robin’s wedding aired on December 29, 2008, there were an alternate set of scenes in which Robin was wearing a dress with “a bunch of pillows exploding”. Was this a consequence of these scenes being interpreted by someone whose interpretation may have determined the direction of “the story”?]

While embracing each other, Sonny’s hand got cut and his blood got on Kate’s reception dress.
Kate panicked and she revealed that she believed in the superstition that blood on the wedding dress is “the worst omen of all”.

She then engaged in a ritual to make the curse go away. She threw salt. She spit. She made Sonny do the same. And she “hopped” around the couch. Saying that her Nona had told her that to break the curse she would have to “hop in a full circle while chanting faith and love six times”. These story point would become crucial later in the December of 2008 and early 2009.

Sonny then suggested that they could instead break the curse by making love. And so they did.

Kate then opened up to explain why she was superstitious.

She spoke of her cousin named Olivia. That there was this one time when Kate (or Connie) and Olivia were playing together, and that Olivia broke a mirror that was cherished by their grandmother.
The mirror broke into pieces and Nona made Kate and Olivia perform a ritual to break the curse.

This was the story of the mirror. But what was the truth of this story? Or was there a particular truth?

There was a history of the mirror on General Hospital.

A few months before these episodes aired, there was a scene where Claudia broke a mirror with a vase full of red roses. She then looked at her own image in the pieces of the mirror. Was breaking the mirror a scripted part of that scene?

A few years before, there was a scene in which Sonny broke the mirror in his living room and it was revealed that a wire system was placed behind the mirror. Was this scripted?

What was the significance of the mirror in Sonny and Kate’s story?

Was the mirror the representation of the heart and soul of a human being?

Was it the representation of trust between people?

Was it the representation of a secret?

Was it the manifestation of the conflict between Kate and Olivia?

All of these interpretations would manifest in the story of Sonny and Kate in the months to come in 2008.

And then, who was Olivia and what was her significance in the story of Sonny and Kate? The character would enter the scene in late September of that year. Around that time, a quote was published of the head writer at that time that “Kate and Olivia are like sisters. Even closer. That is a very important plot point.”

Could it be that Kate and Olivia were the two aspects of the same person?
