Sonny and Kate – September 4, 2008, to September 16, 2008.

The revelation that Sonny and Carly had sex back in May of 2008.

The mirror.

It was revealed to Kate, by her assistant Clarice, that Sonny and Carly had sex back in May when they took Michael to an institute to be taken care of there.

When Kate found out, she decided to break up with Sonny and cancel the wedding.

Sonny and Kate had a series of conversations on how it would be possible for Kate to trust Sonny now that she knows the truth. This was especially relevant given the conversations that Sonny and Kate had had when they were in the island together. Conversations about Carly’s place in Sonny’s life.

Given that Kate was already somewhat suspicious as to the connection between Sonny and Carly, her fears were validated when she learned the truth.

Sonny insisted that he loved Kate and that he would be loyal to Kate if Kate gave him a chance.

Kate, however, was not easily convinced. In those scenes, Sonny said to Kate that he would accept Kate’s position only if she would break the mirror that was in her office. He said that he would believe that they were over if Kate broke the mirror.

Kate couldn’t follow through and she admitted that she wanted to marry Sonny after all.

Jax and Diane tried to change Kate’s mind saying that she was too naïve to believe that Sonny had changed. That he had moved on from his complicated past with Carly.

There were two story points present.

First, the set up was there for the story to go to different directions based on what future would bring. It could be that Sonny would indeed remain loyal to Kate and that they could have a marriage. The other possibility would be that Kate’s fears would come true. That there would be a situation where Sonny would betray Kate.

There is also another way to look at this setting: would Kate end up turning her back on Sonny because of a situation that could be interpreted in more than one way? That out of her mistrust she would make choices indicating that she did not really trust Sonny?

Things would become very complicated in November and December of that year and that had much to do with this context and background.

You could look at the story as Sonny truly moving on from the past and remaining true to his relationship with Kate. You could also look at the story that the opposite may manifest. That the warnings that several characters were giving to Kate would manifest.

These complications would influence how fans would interpret the story to come and those interpretations, in turn, would be a major factor in how things continued to be written.

The second story point was that of the mirror. In these scenes, Sonny used the metaphor to tell Kate that he would protect her heart as well as her life and that Kate’s heart would not break like the mirror.

But the mirror could also represent trust and the possibility of it being broken could lead to conflict and breaking of trust.
Given the history of how “the mirror” was written in General Hospital stories in the past, this could be a story point that would surface later that year.

As far as I remember, in that time period, a secret came out that Olivia, Kate’s cousin, had a son, Dante, who was Sonny’s. That Kate knew about this long-lost son and that she had kept the truth from Sonny since they were teenagers in Bensonhurst.

This paved the way for entrance of Olivia in this story. Who was Olivia? Would she protect Kate and Sonny’s relationship, or would she create conflict?

Given the backstory of the broken mirror with Connie and Olivia, how did this fit into this story?
