Yes. It would likely mean more airtime. Again, it's just a rumor but many actors do become heavily invested in their characters and some are quite vocal about it. Examples from shows I watch:

OLTL Tina/Cord is one of my all time favorite soap couples. They married four times. The 4th being right before OLTL ended. The actor who played Cord left the show for like a year and during that time Tina was paired with Cain Rogan. Cord was presumed dead but was held in a prison in another country. TPTB told him the plan was to reunite Tina/Cord and he objected. He said that he was tired of playing dummy to Tina's lies/manipulations. He said that being in prison for a year likely changed Cord and so they explored that and Tina and Cord did not reunite. Tina and Cain remained a couple.

Grey's Anatomy - Meredith was in love with Derek who was married and bouncing between both women. Creator Shonda Rimes wrote a monologue for Meredith where she literally begged him "Pick me. Choose me. Love me." Ellen Pompeo said it made her want to throw up. A woman begging a man to pick her. Derek chose his wife for a bit. EP was so bothered by the dialogue that Shonda then wrote something where Meredith took back control and told Derek off.

Now where Derek/Meredith were concern both actors talked and went to Shonda together and said: We are tired of the back and forth between them. Please either put them together or break them up permanently. Shonda said she totally understood and once she put them together--it was going to be for the long haul and that's what happened. On Y&R Eric and Melody (Victor/Niki) did the same thing with TPTB. Put Niki and Victor together for good or leave them split up.

Sam is very different when she's with Jason. Does anyone remember the tearful speech (paraphrasing): "You are my whole world. I am nothing without you?" Sam said something like that to Jason once and it was 🤮

It could be that KM felt that Sam would never want to reunite with Jason after learning that he stay away WILLINGLY for 3 years and all for another woman who was the cause of many an argument in the Jason/Sam pairing.
