Sonny and Kate – September 22, 2008

Sonny went back to Bensonhurst to meet with Olivia and to ask her to attend his wedding to Kate.

Layers of story were revealed as Olivia had deep resentments towards Kate (Connie). Olivia’s point of view was that Connie could have achieved her dream without changing her name and hiding her background.

Sonny tried to explain Kate’s perspective and that Kate truly missed her family and often thought of them. That she simply made a mistake and made the decision that she felt was right for her at that age and with her situation at that time.

Something else that was written into these scenes was all the grievances that already existed about Kate among many fanbases. Her “negative” character traits were emphasized, and a convincing backstory was not written at that time to explain those character traits.

For example, it was suggested that Kate was marrying Sonny for superficial reasons rather than having deep feelings for him. Even though it was written that Kate was lonely, and Sonny was all the family she had.

The fans who cared about the Kate character were awaiting, for months, for a backstory to be written for Kate (Connie) to more deeply explain her choices in life; her changing her name and leaving Bensonhurst. Her leaving Sonny at the street corner. And her not accepting Sonny’s first proposal in the January of 2008. However, a backstory was not written at that time.

It was written, however, that Kate and Olivia had a big fight the last time they had seen each other in Bensonhurst, and that Kate never returned to Bensonhurst after that fight.

There was speculation that Olivia was the Bensonhurst version of Carly. That Olivia was the more sexual girl, and that Connie was a “prude”. That they were competitive. However, there was this distinction that Kate and Olivia actually loved each other as cousins.

In that same episode, Kate had scenes with Carly in which she warned Carly about causing problems for Kate’s marriage and to stay away from Sonny. Kate insisted that her and Sonny had a special connection that Carly wouldn’t understand.

Aside from the details of Kate, Olivia, and Sonny’s backstories that were revealed in these scenes, there were other details that pertained to the story that would be told in November and December of that year.

One detail was when Sonny told Olivia that the incident with Kate and Jax a few months before was a “misleading” situation. Could this have been a hint to the Thanksgiving story that would be written that year? The Thanksgiving story where Kate and Jax appeared to have slept together?

If Olivia knew the truth, would she tell the truth?
