Sonny and Kate – September 23, 2008

Sonny came back from Bensonhurst and had scenes with Kate on September 23, 2008.

Kate was wearing a black and white outfit in these scenes fitting within the pattern of black and white scenes that the character had been having for the past few months. The pattern that would repeat itself on December 12, 2008, in fateful scenes that were key in shaping the direction of the story and the direction of history.

After Sonny came back from Bensonhurst, Kate asked Sonny to tell her where he was, and Sonny told her that it is a surprise for her that would be revealed eventually. He said that it is the kind of surprise “that you can’t tell until it’s time but I will say this: It is gonna be worth the wait”.

They then had a conversation about Carly and Kate’s conversation with her in the previous episode. Sonny told Kate that she shouldn’t worry about Carly because Sonny was determined to stay true to his relationship with Kate.

The characters then became intimate but that was interrupted when the priest rang the bell to meet with Kate about the marriage ceremony.

Kate was a successful woman in the fashion industry but, in these scenes, the traditional side of her came out and she asked Sonny to leave because she had to meet with the priest!

The next scene was with Sonny, Kate, and the priest. Kate and the priest were talking and then Sonny entered the scene while making fists. Was this an indication that Sonny was asserting his power in these scenes in relation to Kate? Why was this layer of the story written in these scenes in this way?

This is embedded in the context that Operation Cast Lead began on December 27, 2008, a day after boxing day.

December 26, 2008, was also the first day of Robin’s second wedding that year.

Sonny and Kate had a conversation with the priest about Sonny’s previous marriages and Kate was concerned that Sonny’s previous marriages with Carly may not have been annulled. After a conversation, the priest said that there would be no problem unless “the bride has misgivings”. Kate then turned to Sonny and the focus was on Sonny’s facial expression.

Kate said: “No, I have no misgivings and I’m sorry for taking us off course so Sonny and I would like to have a traditional ceremony. We would like to say the traditional vows from the common book of prayers except there will just be one exception: I will not say the word obey.”

In my mind, at that time, this was a foreshadowing to a situation where Kate could be undermined. Perhaps by one of her rivals in the story. Even worse than that; a situation where she would be publicly and clearly humiliated. But I did not speak up at that time. I couldn’t distinguish for myself that this situation would be unethical.
The background to these scenes, of course, were all the other scenes that had come before in the few months before the wedding. With all the hints and layers of story that indicated that a dark story could be awaiting Sonny and Kate. In my mind, it was only a story.

It was during this time that the rumor leaked about an on-screen story having turned into a “full fledged dangerous liaisons.” Why was this rumor dropped? Why at that time? By whom?

Sonny and Kate had a conversation again about Sonny’s surprise for Kate. Sonny said:
“My surprise will ward off all stupid curses. My surprise is the good omen that ends all bad omens. My surprise is so fantastic that anything that’s happened or will happen will not spoil our beautiful day.”

What was this surprise? Did this manifest in the story of Sonny and Kate in the months to come?

What was it that Sonny and Kate had to overcome to have their happy ending?
