Sonny and Kate – September 24, 2008, to September 25, 2008

The wedding was approaching, and Kate was thinking about her past. She was reading from her diary.

Her memories from Olivia and Sonny. Her memory of Sonny ending his relationship with Olivia and asking Connie out. Her memory of the conflict between her and Olivia. A conflict that was perhaps more than Connie having dated Sonny after Olivia knowing Olivia’s feelings.

She was nostalgic and there was a sadness in how she spoke.

She then told Sonny about Nona’s necklace. A necklace that every bride in the Falconeri family (Connie’s family) would wear. Kate realized that she was not wearing the necklace and her feelings about the subject were ambivalent.

The conversation was a remembering of the past and Kate’s regrets about her choices regarding her family. She then revealed that there was this one time when she had a big fight with Olivia, and she left Bensonhurst and said that she would never go back. Kate said that was the last time that she saw her parents alive.

That she missed her family. Very much.

The next few scenes were around the rehearsal of the marriage ceremony. As Sonny and Kate were preparing for the occasion, two of Kate’s bridesmaids cancelled for different reasons. The flowers for the rehearsal were funeral flowers. And a kind of bird was flying around the bell tower of the church. All adding to Kate’s anxiety that something may happen to take away her happiness.

Kate asked Maxie to be her maid of honour and Maxie accepted. The priest said: “third time is the charm.” Mike said: “or three strikes and you are out.”

There were also some ambiguous lines of dialogue.
Kate: “Sonny, you have to admit that all these things are more than a coincidence.”

Sonny: “No, what was more than a coincidence is when you drove your car past my office that night, stopped in, and we saw each other again.”
Kate: “Yeah, Ok, that’s true.”

Again, there was this idea in my space that the future was being written in the present. That a secret would be uncovered that would reveal that Kate’s appearance in Sonny’s life “was more than a coincidence.”

This thread of thought was present throughout the rehearsal scenes in lines of dialogue. In my mind, they were providing hints to what could happen in the story in the coming months.

With Sonny’s support, Sonny and Kate completed their rehearsal of the marriage ceremony. Sonny said his vows, but Kate’s didn’t air.

While all this was going on, Olivia arrived in town. She met Carly and began talking to her about Kate’s (or Connie’s) past. She revealed Kate’s past even though she knew how important it was for Kate that the past remained a secret. Even worse, the sarcasm in Olivia and Carly’s conversation was not comforting to fans who had invested in the Kate character.

There was contradiction in the lines of dialogue. Olivia told Carly that when Connie was preparing to leave for Princeton, they threw a big party for her but that she didn’t look back after she departed town. This contradicted previous dialogue where it was indicated that Kate did actually return a few times to visit. That her last fight with Olivia was when she got completely separated from Bensonhurst. Was Olivia misrepresenting the truth?

Kate and Olivia finally met after many years. There was love. There was resentment. And there was the complexity of the relationship between two women. Including the secret of Dante.

Kate: “I never intended to live here full time. I never intended to leave Couture. I wasn’t planning to marry Sonny.”

It was written that Olivia’s presence was the surprise that Sonny had planned for Kate but was Olivia’s presence really the good omen that ended all bad omens? What about this surprise would be a good omen for the story of Sonny and Kate?

When Sonny, Kate, and Olivia had scenes, layers of story began to appear. The concept that Olivia knew something about Kate that Sonny didn’t. Not just the secret of Dante. But something inherent about who Kate was.

There was this mention of a “cardinal sin” in Olivia’s dialogue borrowing from a religious concept. Again, in a religious line of thought, “pride” is considered a “cardinal sin”. Was this what the writing was referring to? That may have been my interpretation at that time. It may also have been referring to a question of Kate’s love for Sonny. The question of: was it a true love or was it fulfilling some other need for Kate?

Sonny suggested that Olivia becomes Kate’s maid of honour. Kate was not comfortable with the idea but agreed.

Sonny was in love with Kate. He wanted to marry Kate. Olivia had the secret of Dante and knew something about Kate. She became Kate’s maid of honour. And hence the story of Kate and Olivia began to be written.
