September 29, 2008 – the episode began with Kate walking down the isle. Sonny and Kate were at the altar waiting to go through the moment they had been waiting for. The moment when they would be married and could step into the life they had planned. The life in which Sonny was out of the mob, focusing on his coffee business, and the life in which Kate could have her happiness with Sonny and have her career in Crimson at the same time.
The life in which the violence would stop.
The dream didn’t come true as Kate was shot at the altar, in the solar plexus area where in chakra practice has to do with one’s identity. The concept would come up in the next few months as Kate’s choices, influenced by who she was, determined the path of her story with Sonny. This was also closely intertwined with her story with Olivia. Again, the two characters representing the two aspects of the same person. The situation was so complicated: was it Kate’s choices that led to the circumstance or was it Olivia’s?
One main question was: who shot Kate? From the scenes, it appeared that it was Anthony Zachara who did so. However, Sonny, from the beginning, believed that it was Karpov. That Karpov shot Kate in retaliation for Sonny ending his dealings with him. As Sonny was out of the mob, he turned to Jason and asked him to retaliate against Karpov.
Jason said it was too soon to make a conclusion that Karpov was responsible. But Sonny seemed certain that he was. His theory gained support when Spinelli revealed that the bullet that had been shot was manufactured in Russia and fired from a Russian rifle. But then again, he didn’t consider the possibility that the entity that shot Kate may have wanted it to “appear” that Karpov had shot Kate. Sonny continued to believe that Karpov was responsible for Kate’s shooting even though Karpov reiterated that he would respect the truce that existed between him and Sonny.
Based on how the episodes was written, Anthony Zachara shot Kate to create further tension between Sonny and Jason. This situation would become more and more relevant as the story unfolded in the next few months.
Olivia was at Kate’s bedside. Talking to her about their relationship. It was in these moments that it was revealed, on screen, that there was a secret between Kate and Olivia.
Olivia then confronted Sonny holding him responsible for Kate’s shooting. She implied that Sonny had lied about leaving the mob and that in doing so he had put Kate’s life at risk.
The truth was that Sonny was out of the mob when Kate was walking down the isle but that he was not entirely honest with Kate about his dealings with Karpov in the couple of months before that.
This would be the common theme in the coming months as Olivia became an element in Sonny and Kate’s relationship appearing, on screen, to want to protect Kate as well as the secret that existed between her and Kate. But then again, and at the same time, Olivia’s loyalty to Kate would be questioned as Olivia became closer to Carly. As well, as Olivia began to deal with how she felt about Sonny herself.
