Which is why I think Nicole should have "died" (no body, of course) or been put in a coma or something. It would've been hard to explain Eric staying while she left but not Eric staying and raising the baby if Nicole was somehow out of commission. I'd even be ok with a Nicole recast as long as they make sure they got it right.
