I know budgets aren't what they used to be so no tornados, fires etc. How about one of Sonny's enemies kidnaps Wiley and Amelia and everyone thinks it's Drew and Willow? Both are cleared by solid alibies and thus Michael and Willow are forced to work together to rescue their children and bring them home safely. This brings Michael and Willow closer and he petitions the court for join custody--with the stipulation that his children are never to be around Drew. It's not Michael's place to say where Willow lives or who she dates. But if he offered her joint custody and to cover the mortgage for one year--he wouldn't be buying her a house and Willow can get firmly on her feet and have plenty saved up by the time she will start payments. Plus, I'm sure Michael would still pay her child support.
I just think this writing regime are hacks. And this is why they need to bring in 1-2 new writers each year for fresh ideas. I'm sure the writers have a contract so if ratings and audience feedback is good--then the writers get their contract renewed--if not, you bring in 1-2 newbies.
