CA has been plagued by NIMBYism forever. For example, even in densely populated areas like LA, there are these Coastal Commission rules that limit the housing that can be built within a couple of miles from the coast.
There is lots of pushback now, but these are huge fights.
We lived in Venice (an LA neighborhood) and it's always been mixed use. Yet, most of the housing was either single family homes or tiny apartment buildings. Even a mile from the beach, along a busy street (Washington Street), there arethese arcane rules that state you cannot build certain types of housing within this zone, or that charge so much money that only the wealthy can afford to build.
So much for a focus on equity RME.
While, at the same time, they allow oil derricks to continue to pump not far outside the zone. I'm thinking of Baldwin Hills/Fox Hills. Can't build housing but SURE! Pump oil.
Most homeless would not be homeless if they had a small amount of help each month. $200-$400 a month. Allowing for shallow rent subsidies would help with this problem.
