to say the least. Likewise for the way they’ve weaponized DEIA — making diversity, equality/equity, inclusiveness and accessibility all into dirty words. I know the history of “woke” is long but its use in the Black Lives Matter movement really set the rightwing off in recent years. As a (blonde, blue-eyed, white, female) longtime political activist, I’ve lost count of the times I’ve been called a social justice warrior with the tone of being called a c*nt — because “justice” also is such a dirty word and concept.
The only thing that frustrates me a little sometimes about “woke” is that I wish more young, recently politicized activists knew the history of the word rather than sometimes acting like they invented it. We always need to know about, respect and honor those who came before us who paved the way, often at great risk, for rights we may have come to take for granted.
We are living through a time now that absolutely highlights that the fight for justice is never over.
