The data entry people use a date that makes a file belong to someone who is 150 years old so the program will continue to run but the file will be noted as having some kind of error. 150 years old is both a filler and an error.

It may allow the person to receive benefits if they're eligible (the program continues), but it denotes that there is missing data in the file.

So much for all the "HA HA! They're paying people who've been dead for years!" It's a COBOL work around.
