This news article has reminded me to watch the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale. These people want us to go way further back than to the 1950s. This far right evangelical pastor just opened a new church in DC a few blocks from the US Capitol because many church members work in the Trump administration. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is a member of this church. Wilson’s original church is in Idaho.

Among things that he preaches are:

* The US is a Christian nation (Protestant not Catholic)
* Empathy can be a sin
* Giving women the right to vote was a bad idea
* Slavery wasn’t that bad; many slaves had good relationships with their owners
* Calls for the end of same-sex marriage, abortion and Pride parades.
* Advocates restricting pornography and immigration.
* Emphasizes an all-powerful God with dominion over all of society (so no separation of church and state)
* Patriarchal idea that men and women have different God-given roles. Women within CREC churches cannot hold church leadership positions, and married women are to submit to their husbands.
* Women cannot vote in church elections and Wilson prefers women to not vote in government elections
* “The sexual act cannot be made into an egalitarian pleasuring party. A man penetrates, conquers, colonizes, plants. A woman receives, surrenders, accepts.”
