and sometimes served as dessert, that's basically a streusel cake only with cherry (or other fruit-flavored) pie filling swirled through it. Mom used to make it all the time. This recipe is about as close as I could find to what I grew up thinking of "kuchen" as [link] I've looked at other recipes online and most of them call the recipe "cherry kuchen BARS" and have a thin bottom crust. The kuchen I knew (and still know) is more an even kind of cake with the cherry swirled through it.
