I kind of had to watch the sequel. I’m not sorry I did but, yeah, meh.

I’m dying to see Poor Things. I get excited just watching the trailer!

You will not be disappointed. I think it’s my favorite 2023 movie so far.

Anyway, I recently finished watching all seasons of Homeland, then I followed that with a rewatch of The Looming Tower. Which led me to a couple of good movies:

I’ve only seen the first few seasons of Homeland a long time ago and then, for some reason, forgot about it. It might have just been a victim of a particularly busy time of my life. I should revisit it. The Looming Tower sounds interesting.

The Report stars Adam Driver as Senate staffer Dan Jones and Annette Bening as Sen. Dianne Feinstein. It details the CIA and White House attempts to bury the results of the Intelligence Committee investigation into the destruction of EIT (extreme interrogation techniques aka torture) tapes. It was fascinating.

Even better is Shock and Awe, directed by Rob Reiner, starring Reiner as Knight Ridder Washington bureau head John Walcott and Woody Harrelson, James Marsden and Tommy Lee Jones as the reporters who exposed the Bush admin’s lies about Saddam Hussein and wmd. Knight Ridder was the only news organization to get it right. I never want to see Condi Rice’s face again.

They are both fictional accounts of course, but both stories are based in fact. I gotta say, they both left me feeling lousy about the U.S. intelligence community. And the media. And government. *sigh* It’s not feel good stuff but I’m glad I watched both movies.

It sounds like you’ve been having a little TV/film festival with a theme!
