this is a dissenting opinion but, I did not love it. It would not get my vote for the Best Picture Oscar. I’ve sat through 3-hour movies plenty of times with no problem. In general, I do not have problems with long movies. But this one seemed like a long 3 hours to me. I think it could have been significantly shorter. Maybe 2.5 hours.
I had no issues with the performances, particularly Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. It was the script I wasn’t crazy about. I know, I know, it’s adapted from a book. But after 3 hours, the climax of the movie is Oppenheimer losing his security clearance and Strauss losing his chance at a Cabinet position? I just didn’t care. It felt like the film wanted me to be more sympathetic to Oppenheimer than I am.
Maybe it just didn’t live up to its hype for me. I’m not sorry I watched it. But I don’t really understand all the love for this movie.
