If we want SZ to survive, we’re going to all have to post more to keep it

worthwhile for Jeff to keep it going. It’s a problem though if peeps who want to post can’t log in. Only Jeff can fix that. But it’s up to us to create more foot traffic, both in posters and lurkers. Lurkers are important to SZ from an advertising POV. But lurkers need something to read here.

I'd kind of assumed once SZ was free for everyone to post that we'd gain a few posters, either former or new. That wasn't the case :-(

I hoped that would happen too once SZ was no longer subscription to post. And I think we have seen some posters from the past from time to time.

One thing that I find interesting...back in SZ's heyday, most of the posts were made in the morning. I don't know if a lot of people were posting before they went to work, on the way to work (while riding on a subway or bus) or at work before starting work. All I knew is by the time I got home at 3:45 PM and checked, SZ was almost dead (and almost nobody posted on weekends). A number of times, I posted what I thought was somewhat controversial opinions at the end of the day and saw the next day that there were few views and no responses. Now, I can hop on SZ at 11:00 AM or even noon and notice no new posts for the day.

That pattern does seem to have changed. In the past, it seemed like most people were posting from daytime M-F work. SZ tended to mysteriously die after 5pm ish. Now mornings tend to be quiet. Speaking solely for myself, I mostly post from my phone or tablet at various times between things — while riding on a bus to the pool, while having coffee in a cafe, while in a medical waiting room, at the airport, etc. I’m also a night owl so I sometimes post late at night. If I’m super busy, sometimes that’s when I have time to respond to posts. I wonder when it’s Monday or Thursday, if we see no new post, whether most of us hesitate to start the new one, waiting for someone else to do it. I’m definitely guilty of that.

I was just talking about this with Dad the other day...are message boards dead now that we have Twitter and other social media sites on which to connect?

Sure it has. But Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram, etc are not new. They’ve all been around for a long time now and some message boards have survived and are busier than SZ has been lately.

I hope SZ survives, at least, through this next presidential election.
