on a beer budget". I'm fine with getting my clothes from Walmart or Old Navy or Target if I'm feeling fancy (and Goodwill when I'm not). I shudder at the idea of paying more than, say, $40 for a pair of shoes. I'd much rather eat at a cheap restaurant where I can EAT rather than spend $300 on a thimble full of salad, three chicken "medallions" the size of a quarter and three string beans artfully fanned out around the chicken (a friend of mine actually got this exact meal, for this price--plus a non-alcoholic beverage and a small crème brûlée for dessert; luckily, her boss was paying...and despite being a VERY slender woman, my friend had to stop at Burger King on the way home and get something to eat). But hotels? Even if I'm only going to be in them for a few hours a day (plus the time I'm asleep)? Yeah, that's where I'll splurge. Balconies are delightful. I'm actually kind of happy that I waited a bit too long to book a room this weekend at a Comfort Inn in Nags Head...I was originally going to be budget conscious and get a room facing the street but by the time I went to actually book the room, those were sold out and I had to shell out $30/night more for a room with a "bay view" (as opposed to an ocean view). But the room comes with a balcony, so yay!
