Sometimes I'm a bit jealous of Dad. He does not now, nor has he ever, had

In reply to: not really. my issue is more about brand familiarity. Same @ Trader Joes posted by chloe
much of a preference for anything and even when he DOES notice the difference between brands*, he usually doesn't care. He's also really good about eating things he doesn't like so as not to waste food.

* we still talk about the time he couldn't believe I was able to taste the difference between Hershey's chocolate syrup and the Great Value chocolate syrup he bought. He actually brought me two spoonsful of syrup--one Hershey's, one GV--and gave them to me and then was utterly shocked when I picked out the Hershey's syrup right away.

i think i need to focus on items that are on sale, recommendations from friends or a free sample, which honestly are few and far between since COVID. as it should be, but it's just one less way to 'try for free.'

Two things here: first, inflation has me shopping the sales more and more, with mixed results. Sometimes I'll find something I really like--either a different, cheaper brand of a product* or maybe something I've never eaten before like a certain kind of soup.

* and sometimes this backfires. The Aldi Simply Nature cheese puffs are inferior enough to Trader Joe's cheddar puffs, and even Great Value's cheddar puffs, that Dad made ME finish them. Which...took me a while because the taste was not as good and the texture was grainy.

And two...yeah, I wish they'd bring back the free samples. I get that people were likely abusing them, helping themselves to 3, 4 or 5 samples, but I like to think most of us weren't and it wasn't costing the company too much money. I don't have a Costco membership...do they still do free samples?

Whole Foods yesterday not only had only one free sample where they used to have at least half a dozen (it was for some kind of fish...and there were no samples left the entire time I was there), they also didn't have any kind of clearance/last chance shelf of products like they did the last time, and all the previous times, I was there.

when i go to stop & shop I know exactly what the Mott's Applesauce tastes like opposed to the Apple & Eve. I know that I like Hood milk better than Garelick, but Hood is a little too pricey. When I go to Whole Foods and Trader Joes, I don't any of those things. LOL it's indecisive city.

I wish EVERY product, be it a food item or a household product or some kind of bath/beauty/healthcare need, came in a travel/sample size so we could all make better decisions. Not everyone has a dad to eat up what they don't like*

* He'll jokingly refer to having to finish something I don't want as "sending it down the Dad-sposal".
