It was also heartbreaking. Two gay male government employees (one working for McCarthy) fall in love in the 1950s, and it goes back and forth between the 1950s and 1980s (with glimpses into the 60s and 70s) to show how their relationship evolved when Hawk (Matt Bomer) and how they struggled.
