the other day: American Factory (originally aired in 2019). In 2008, the GM plant in Dayton, OH closed its doors and many in the city were left without a job. In 2014, a Chinese businessman invested $500 million to reopen the factory as the American branch of his company, Fuyao Glass. Many of the GM workers were hired back...at a serious pay cut. From that point on, the documentary explores--without really taking sides--the major cultural differences between factory workers in China and factory workers in America, with unflattering things said on both sides. As someone who's worked in manufacturing, I could relate SO HARD to so much of this film, and a lot of what is said is things I've heard. The ending is a sober warning about the future of manufacturing (most of you can probably guess it) and frankly depressed me a little. Still a very worthwhile film.
