a long while ago--Bill Bryson's The Mother Tongue (highly recommend, BTW)--that said English is the language with the most "common" words in use, with just around 200,000. German was next at around 150,000...but often they'd put two words together to make a new word. For example, they have the word "rain", and the word "shield"...and they put the words together--"rainshield"--as their word for umbrella. Apparently, they're referred to as compound nouns in German...
