It also passed through our minds that, if we did make a lot of cash from a garage sale, it might not be worth it in a place where so many people have guns. We felt like donating or giving away good stuff was better karma.

Did you both REALLY feel that someone was going to rob you at a garage sale? I've never heard of that happening anywhere.

I sometimes donate to Goodwill, and I shop there as well. But right now, Goodwill's prices are higher than ever; I've witnessed this personally and seen people post similar sentiments on TikTok and other social media. A woman in Alaska was showing items at her local Goodwill that had gone up significantly in price. Many thrift store workers now recognize a brand name and charge accordingly. OTOH, at the garage sale today, we had $100 purses in near perfect condition going for $8. The buyer got a great deal--likely better than she would've at a thrift store--and someone who could use a little cash got a little cash (they weren't my purses, BTW--I've never owned a purse that cost more than $40, and that one was a gift from someone else <g>).

So "good karma" can be earned from donating stuff--and that's certainly the easier way to go, as it's MUCH less work--and it also can be earned by selling an item at a lower price than a thrift store or charity organization would.
