First option:

Pros: I get a checked bag and I know I like the building. Even though I'm using miles I think the price is decent.

Cons: You can only select "one bedroom" and not pick out the exact apartment you want. They're all individually owned so some have different layouts, etc. Some have tubs, others just walk in showers. Some have Nespresso machines (I love mine, lol). It's also just a 1 br instead of 2.

I'd say no. You'd be expecting the same great place you stayed last time and might get somewhere much worse. I think it would be hard to be in the building you like, knowing the "perfect" apartment is right there and not being able to stay in it. And did I understand this correctly? $1K in taxes to use your miles? I've never had a card that offered miles, so I don't know how that would work.

Oh, I didn't explain that well. For airfare, when you're using miles for a ticket, you usually have to pay the taxes on said ticket. For *most* places it's not that much (I think I literally paid $12 when I used them for a trip to NC). But the UK is CRAZY high with that. I had a friend a couple years ago try to do a layover in the UK on the way to India for a family wedding, she hadn't been to London in years. The taxes were like $600 if she went that route. She instead went through Qatar and the taxes were maybe $100. It's very possible that I'm just not looking early enough. I did a mock up just now and I may have slightly exaggerated - it would have been around 65k miles and $500 in taxes for that week, though if I booked now for next say April it would be around 45k miles and just $250 in taxes. It just seems pointless to give them 65k miles *and* $500 when a flight costs around $800 round trip. The 65k miles seem like they should be worth more than just $300.

It wouldn't cost me anything to use these miles, it would take $1,000 off the trip.

I also have gone to the website of the apartments, none of them are bad - there are some that IMHO are better than others because I like a tub and there were some where I thought the bedroom was a little too small, but overall they were all good.

Option 2:

Pros: Able to pick the exact apartment I want.

Cons: Can't use miles.

Ummm...maybe?

Option 3:

Pros: I'd have the place I really liked.

Cons: Even if I was able to get them to agree to the discount, it's still on the pricier side. But a great place to stay.

I think what it comes down to IMO is how important is it to have the best place to stay? If you're planning on just going, going, going most of the time you're there, and the place you return to at night is simply a place to sleep, I'd concentrate more on finding somewhere in a good location that won't be too expensive. Sounds like you've ruled out all hotels...even budget stays? I've never traveled abroad, so I don't know if hotels outside of the US offer amenities like complimentary breakfasts or fridges in the room or whatever else we spoiled Americans demand <g>.

I definitely like staying in an apartment. Last year in Paris we stayed two days in a hotel room and it was pretty cramped with three of us, luckily just for two days. I've actually never stayed in a hotel in London, the first two times I went I stayed with a friend and then on our honeymoon we were at this place - last year we stayed at a GREAT place but it was for 7 people and is like $3800 for the week we'll be there and it's a little too much lol. It was three bedrooms and a living room and frankly HUGE. I like being able to cook and not just eat out every night, and have somewhere to keep snacks and have some time away from each other if needed. The other plus for the place we stayed at is that they have an actual concierge desk where we could leave our luggage, since our flight gets in around 8am but check in isn't until 4pm. The other place doesn't have that.

Whatever you decide....eeee, London! Sounds like an amazing trip! And thank you for letting me participate in a RL version of House Hunters <g>.

*g* I will definitely keep you updated on what I pick, I feel like I need to get the airfare soon, it's not going down any.
