The writers - especially Sara Hess, but Ryan also has this problem - are WAY too invested in the Rhaenyra/Alicent relationship. Like, to the point of throwing all logic to the wind. And that is a show creation, it wasn't in the book, so it makes sense that putting such a huge focus on something that didn't exist in the book but still aiming for multiple plots that WERE in the book are two things that conflict with each other. Because Ryan tried to sell some **** about wanting Alicent to be less "conniving" and more sympathetic and conflicted than she was in the book. Except you could have easily accomplished that without this scene. Have her voice to some other character that she now understands she was wrong, that Viserys wasn't talking about Aegon, and she regrets her choices that helped lead to the war (although lbr, Alicent wasn't nearly as in charge as she thought she was - Otto was going to do this with or without her). Say she's terribly sorry for her role in getting the realm to war, but she's stuck now. She can't sacrifice her children to end the war, and it's entirely possible it won't even help. They did NOT need Alicent to go to Rhaenyra and sell out her child to his actual death (at least that's what she thought she was doing). That's not sympathetic, it's bonkers.
