it *would* probably be cheaper to just get it all done. As I said, the only thing the pro thought was worth saving was the basin itself. We've already put down a deposit; I don't know if the deposit would be refundable if we went with someone else/a brand new sink altogether.

Ultimately, it's not my decision to make. And as Dad is still of sound mind (and stubborn body), I don't feel it's my place to override any decision he makes, though I will suggest he look into an all new sink, or maybe call the people doing the work on ours and see about getting the cost reduced. Pro *did* say most of the parts are guaranteed for life.

I don’t really understand homeowners who don’t want to do maintenance on their home, which is usually their most valuable asset. When my dad was still alive (20 years ago) he was pretty handy and could do a lot of maintenance and fixing things himself. But there are some things that you always call a professional to do.

IA. But Dad has long been the kind of guy who only thinks about something when it's broken beyond his kind of repair. As I said, maintenance on the various parts of the house isn't a priority to him. He does a pretty good job keeping up with his car though; I don't know why he doesn't think he should keep the house up as well.
