Also, I didn't realize expanders were as "popular" as they are. I knew several people who needed braces back in middle school/high school...I was the only one who needed the expander. Mom couldn't stop laughing when they told her my mouth was "too small" (c'mon, Mom...I didn't talk THAT much, and if I did, I got it from your side of the family). Even when they showed her the mold of my teeth, she was still skeptical.
