we had not one but two cans of Great Value hot dog sauce in the cupboard. Dad used to like a little on some kielbasa once in a while but he knows it's not good for him and he's cut waaaaaay back. But it's been bugging me that those cans of hot dog sauce have been taking up space in the cupboard, and yet I can't just throw them out. So I decided to use one of the cans of hot dog sauce as a sort of base for a Cincinnati-style chili. I love Cincinnati-style chili (and need to try the real deal some day in Cincy rather than just going to Skyline Chili) but I didn't feel like a) making the trek to the nearest Skyline, which is close to 40 minutes away or b) going to the grocery store to get ingredients. So I added about 1/4 tsp. each of cinnamon, ground cloves, and cocoa powder, and a dash of allspice (because a dash was all I had), plus I used about a quarter cup of water to rinse out the can and thin out the sauce, since Cincinnati chili is kind of thin. It was surprisingly good. Authentic? Yeah, no. But honestly, when I crave Cincinnati-style chili, I mostly want the cinnamon in the sauce, the spaghetti base and the mound of cheddar cheese on top <g>. I ate my Cincinnati-style chili "3 way" for a meal Sunday, Monday and then today.
