It was yesterday. The surgeon was very worried that it would take 2-3 hours and she would be on a ventilator for several days, and that her lung function would never get back what it was. Plus she has congestive heart failure so that was a risk too. He was able to move VERY quickly and finished in less than an hour and a half, and they extubated her right after in the operating room. So far it seems like her lung function is the same as before surgery.
She's in pain and will be in the hospital awhile, but she's actually being downgraded from the ICU to the progressive care unit, hopefully tonight. We originally thought she would be in ICU until the weekend!
Right now I'm likely going to go back to MD on Sunday and possibly fly down for a short visit mid-December (we're already coming down the day after Christmas). I've been staying in her apartment, it's weird being there without her.
Funny story though - last night after recovery when she was first in the ICU we went to see her. She was far more lucid than we were expecting, but at one point she kept saying "Jefferson" and we had no idea why. Then she starts talking again and we got really close and she says "monument". And we're like, Jefferson Monument? (I realize now she meant Jefferson Memorial, but same thing). And she says yes. So we're looking around the room, looking for a picture of it or something, and she says "up there". So we look up and the vent in the ceiling really does kind of look like the Jefferson Memorial. The nurse said she was the first person to ever say that 😂
ETA: The vent
Thank you everyone for your prayers and well wishes!
