I was so shocked I couldn't speak.

It's completely understandable.

My roommate was accustomed to these but I had never experienced one, just having moved from NYC. She kept calling my name until I responded, then told me exactly what to do. Otherwise, I would have just sat there (under a heavy desk), in stunned silence.
