has a ladies' craft night (it's for the women but men wouldn't be turned away if they wanted to come). You're encouraged to bring a snack and a craft you're working on--usually it's the knitters who show up with their yarn and needles--and have a "time of fellowship" with your fellow churchgoers. I've gone four times...I don't really enjoy it. The fellowshipping often turns to gossip and complaints about husbands or children or sometimes work. But the last two times I've gone, it was for the express purpose of preparing craft supplies for our church's vacation bible school. They do a craft each of the five nights of VBS and there's a LOT of cutting or bagging supplies to make a "kit", etc.

Anyways...last Friday, I went to ladies' craft night to help with prep for VBS. I spent about two hours (out of the three scheduled) cutting out felt circles, using a paper cutter to cut 12 x 12 paper into small squares and putting together supplies that would be used to make a miniature manger scene. There were seven other women in attendance, including my good church friend (gcf), and all were gabbing away. Most of the time, there were several different conversations going on, and I didn't follow all of them all the time.

After church Sunday, gcf and I were approached by "Mrs. P", who gave each of us a card and told us to open them later. I was assuming it was some kind of (totally unnecessary) thank you note, as Mrs. P usually is in (co-) charge of craft night. But when I got home, I was surprised to find it was a blank note card with an apology written inside. Mrs. P said she was "so sorry for what she said", that she "didn't mean it", she "hopes we weren't offended" and she "will try to do better in the future". Which was very nice of her...but I honestly don't remember her saying much of anything at all, let alone something offensive.

Gcf and I always exchange "good morning--I'm still alive!" texts every morning (which I appreciate, as she lives alone), so I asked her if her card said the same thing and oh yeah, what the heck did Mrs. P say that was so offensive? She replied that indeed her card was also an apology and she too is absolutely clueless about what was said. In fact, neither of us can think of a single thing ANY of the ladies said that was even slightly problematic (with the exception of one newcomer casually tossing out a--very mild--curse word that really was pretty appropriate considering the circumstance). Gcf said she wrote a note herself to give to Mrs. P telling her there was (literally) nothing to apologize for. I'm not sure whether I should write a note of my own, talk to Mrs. P quietly after the service on Sunday or just pretend the whole dang thing didn't happen.
