The main things we hoped to accomplish were:
1. Ensuring his disability services application was in good order. The Cal State system is messed up because heaven forbid CA should ever, ever upgrade its ages-old systems. Either way, he applied last week but something was off. During a session we didn't need (on housing-he's living at home), we walked over to Lassen Hall, where many administrative offices are. Well, it never went through, so he reapplied, it went through, and he scheduled an intake appointment.
We also heard from the woman there, and a mother of another disabled student that Dept of Rehab (DOR) doesn't pay until September. As long as we are in the system, we get a waiver for any late fees for fees, tuition and etc. I assume we will have to pay for parking on our own because classes start on August 24.
2. Starting to schedule classes. At one session for the students, they were shown how to pick and schedule classes. He was able to schedule 3 or 4 (as a DOR student, he is encouraged to do 12 not 15 units). One he couldn't (history methods) because Sac State hasn't yet processed his transcripts (why??? we sent it in April). Anyway, we learned from staff and other parents that this is a common occurrence, to stay on top of it, and we will sort it all out.
Either way, he picked a class on Military History - which I once told him he needed to take because he'd love it. He is very excited about this class.
3. He needs to speak to an academic advisor so he can show DOR his education plan. He's now scheduled this.
4. Final thing is finding a job (he wants to work while in school; he feels he should be helping out financially)..so he needs to go onto their system and set up an appointment to get him going on updating his resume, interviewing coaching, and getting help finding part time employment that hopefully somewhat aligns with his interest.
Over all, a great day!
Plus I remembered what a gorgeous campus this is. Sacramento is just lovely, and this campus is a love note to our local flora and fauna. Redwoods galore, birdies, bunnies, you name it. So pretty.
