Almost 40 years ago, I worked one summer at Perkins (a chain mostly known for its pancakes) where I usually stood behind a register and took people's money (or credit card, though cash was still mostly king back then). But I did have to step in as an "emergency waitress" on a handful of occasions when the usually server called off. I was terrible at the job and amazed at how rude some folks could be.
