In the US, scammers pretend to be the IRS, Social Security, Medicare, the DMV

and other government agencies. In NYC, scammers are constantly telling me I owe money for congestion pricing (a new $9 toll fee we have to drive into Manhattan below 60th St). The threat is loss of your drivers’ license if you don’t pay what you owe. Since I don’t have a car or drivers license, this scam doesn’t work on me. But I bet it does work on some people who are dependent on being able to drive.

Scammers are posing as banks, Amazon, UPS, all kinds of legit businesses. Some of them are sloppy and don’t do it well, phishing for the vulnerable, naive and just plain stupid victims. But many of these scammers are very good and convincing.
