dark looking for, running into everything until we finally found the flashlight only to discover the batteries in it are dead!

I actually learned a good trick from my cousin during our last hurricane. The stake solar lights a lot of people use to line walkways or driveways -- just bring them inside at night and place them around the house. Take them back out in the daytime to recharge, bring them back in at night.
