every year around this time with Italian prune plums. Nana was German and a true master baker. When she immigrated to the US alone at age 18, she worked as a private cook in rich peeps’ homes before she married my grandfather. My aunts (Nana’s daughters) and some of my cousins all tried to make that plum cake exactly the way Nana made it but nobody could. My sister came (and still comes closest). Nana was like an alchemist or magician in the kitchen. If she had recipes they were in her head. She just seemed to know when her dough was right by the texture and feel of it. She made the most amazing Danish pastries that I’ve ever had.
