This weekend is the annual competition (for bragging rights) between post offices, to see who can collect the most food for their local food bank. Usually they collect several tons of food and drop them off at my food bank where helpers (usually teens) transfer the food into various bins. The amount that's donated usually gives the food bank a bit of breathing room before the summer increase demand for food assistance starts. The several tons can last a few months and helps make ends meet or wave at each other from a slightly closer distance.
This is the list of what my food bank always needs:
16 or 18 ounce jars of peanut butter
18 ounce jars of grape jelly
Tuna (usually in the 5 ounce cans)
Tuna Helper
Macaroni and cheese
Progresso soup (or some other chunky/thick soup with meat in it)
Cereal
Nothing expired or open. Place the donated items in a bag or box next to your mailbox so the mail carrier can take it back to the post office to be weighed before it goes to the food bank.
Help stamp out hunger!
