News for the week of 29-Dec-2008
by Carol Banks Weber
Head writer Bob Guza Jr. didn’t reveal a whole lot of spoilers for the coming new year, other than more of the same now. Let’s pick out the interesting from the repetitive: Jason has to decide between defending Sonny’s interests and taking care that Spinelli isn’t taken to prison. Maxie quickly deduces that Winifred has been amassing incriminating data on Spinelli on the sly, while working for the FBI. But she pulls a crazy stunt that does more harm than good. Kate can’t shake Sonny as easily as she says she can. She still finds him an incredible draw, but then there’s Olivia holding all the cards in the undisclosed son she shares biologically with a clueless Sonny. Lucky becomes Elizabeth’s hero again when she faces peril, and maybe, just maybe, the two come together in love again, like they did shortly after they first met. Jason and Sam go off on another caper to prevent Spinelli from falling into the hands of the government. Jax and Carly reconcile, helplessly in love, but each has benefited from past mistakes. Carly will never take Jax for granted and treat him like her #1 prince. Jax will prove to Carly that he loves her above all else when he swoops in to safeguard her at her most perilous hour. Just as Nikolas thinks he’s past the worst in recovering from Emily’s murder, he thinks he’s spied her again for real. This new woman may look like Emily, but she’s her complete opposite in personality. The faux-Emily will serve as a huge draw for Nikolas, who also has come to care deeply for Nadine. The appearance of Rebecca, the faux-Emily, will also give a jolt to the Qs. Trouble didn’t go away just because Patrick and Robin tied the knot in relative peace. There’s more trouble to befall them. Patrick and Matt become even more like brothers through it all. Luke’s answer to his suburban doldrums is to take off for months at a time. This time, with the arrival of someone new, he may have to sit tight.
Patrick and Robin’s 2nd wedding attempt went off without a hitch, full of history, emotion and awesome fashions. Don’t forget the return of vets Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio) and Finola Hughes (Anna Devane Scorpio), who stood up for Kimberly McCullough’s Robin at the wedding. Jason Thompson (Patrick) looked back on taping that day with fondness and a little levity. He enjoyed Rogers’ veteran wisdom and put up with the jibes about nobody on Patrick’s side of the pews (where the hell was Coleman?) due maybe to cost cutting. Thompson said, kidding, that he’s glad he didn’t have to resort to getting married in scrubs but got a real tuxedo for the occasion.
Both Kimberly McCullough (Robin) and Jason Thompson (Patrick) adore the twin babies (Rose and Ruby Romero) who play their daughter Emma. They describe the babies in marveled tones, saying they never hardly cry, which is odd considering the fact that they play a baby who’s supposed to bust out crying every time Robin enters the room. Thompson mentioned another facet of their use; they looked very realistic during the after-birth scenes, because they were about 26 days old at the time themselves.
If Nazanin Boniadi (Leyla) had her druthers, she’d spiff and spice up her character’s dull, drag, conservative wardrobe considerably. Boniadi herself tends toward the fashionable and daring, so when her Leyla was able to act out a fantasy sequence with Bradford Anderson’s Spinelli a while ago, in different attire, “that was fun.” –Soap Opera Digest, December 30, 2008
Lisa LoCicero’s (Olivia) first impressions of co-stars Megan Ward (Kate) and Maurice Benard (Sonny) were favorable, in different ways. Ward was just a darling to LoCicero, from the get-go, showing her around and immediately showing a palpable familial connection, on- and off-screen. Both women are moms with kids around the same age, planning on playdates and Pokemon card-trading. Benard has two sides to him, LoCicero learned. He can be very intense and serious, but he can also be gloriously light, charismatic and funny, she described. “He’s the perfect embodiment of the comedy/tragedy mask [laughs].” –Soap Opera Digest, December 30, 2008
Jacklyn Zeman (Bobbie) was lucky enough to have experienced Christmas in two very different places on the continent of North America. Growing up in New Jersey, she saw a winter wonderland right outside her front door (or a hop, skip and a jump to nearby Manhattan for the Rockettes). Working and living in California with two daughters, she saw a warmer, sunnier version. But the spirit of Christmas remained in her and her family no matter which coast she stayed in. She made sure to make the most of Christmases in sunny California for her daughters when they were younger. One of the ways she did that was to put up two trees, a fake and a real. The fake could stay up earlier and longer, and the real one would last a week or so close to Christmas Day. Another difference in the way Zeman celebrated the holidays is in the way they acknowledged the two different spiritual cultures she and her then-husband came from. They did Christmas up right in the Christian tradition, but also recognized Hanukkah because Glenn Gordon is Jewish. Zeman doesn’t just settle in for Christmas close to home. She’s been known to visit relatives in New Jersey – this was before the children arrived – and head on down to the British Virgin Islands with a group of pals and relatives semi-annually when they could.
Christmas at the Steve Burton (Jason) household is pretty mellow, yet still very festive, thanks to wife Sheree. She starts the holiday season earlier than most by turning on the Christmas music November 15 and leaving it on until January 2. They do the new pjs thing, church service and lounging around, and then they crank up the air conditioner in their home to make like they’re in a winter wonderland and not “in California, where it’s 140 degrees on Christmas Eve.” He looks forward to a Christmas favorite – sweet potatoes with marshmallows and pumpkin pie – and leaves the gifts for the children. “…honestly, we have everything we need.” –Soap Opera Digest, December 30, 2008
Dylan Cash reprises his role as Carly and Sonny’s oldest son Michael this week, even though he’s in a coma the entire time. But say goodbye to vets Tristan Rogers (Robert) and Finola Hughes (Anna), since their reappearance was only for the Scrubs wedding.
Gossip for the week of 29-Dec-2008
by Carol Banks Weber
Winifred has been jackaling her own laptop to copy files from Spinelli’s behind his back and provide them to the FBI whom she’s in cahoots with. Her work aids in Spinelli’s doom, as he’s put on notice by law and order. Jason wants to free Spinelli from prison, but in order to do that, he must rat Sonny out. Sam and Jason kick into superhero gear for Spinelli, alarming Elizabeth and Lucky, who sense that the old JaSam magic is back. Jason’s decisions will negatively affect Sonny as the two inch closer to all-out war. Carly’s attention is split between winning Jax back and sparing Sonny and Jason that all-out war. Anthony sticks his nose in mob business, behind Sonny’s back, to call a hit. Ric stands behind Anthony at first, but then second-guesses himself later. Sam works beyond the grip of the law, which works at odds with her law-abiding lawyer mom Alexis.
Sonny takes some time out of his mob business to sex up Kate. Sonny’s wife Claudia fails to hold onto one of Jerry’s devious DVDs.
A serious condition afflicts Robin, who lives in denial. Miracle Hospital, however, finds it can do very little to help. Patrick has to deal with Robin’s failing condition, as well as losing many patients because of the (tainted) prescription drugs. A new GH doctor comes on the scene, shaking things up. Is this Emily’s carbon copy, a long-lost sister?
