News for the week of 12-Dec-2011

by Carol Banks Weber

Erica Slezak (Viki) joins the ladies of The ViewJanuary 13th — several hours before OLTL’s finale on ABC Daytime — as a special guest-host for a special, one-hour tribute show. The View will feature behind-the-scenes footage from the final taping, historical montages, and interviews of guest stars, including creator Agnes Nixon, and cast members. Soaps fans should e-mail The View for a chance to be among the audience for this momentous event.

Remember Prospect Park’s last announcement? Executives announced they would suspend/postpone plans to continue OLTL online for a web series immediately following its last airdate on ABC Daytime. Everybody assumed they meant they were canceling OLTL, the new web series. But no, not according to the December 7th Variety article by Andrew Wallenstein. Prospect Park has the licensing rights to both AMC and OLTL for a year after their cancellation dates (September 2012 for AMC, January 2013-OLTL) — even if they don’t do anything with it. Yet, they may still be trying to do something, perhaps option an overseas company for co-production, possibly to avoid dealing with the unions (purportedly asking too high a price for the use of cast and crew).

OLTL head writer Ron Carlivati told Soap Opera Digest recently that he can’t revise the ending for any reshoot. Thanks to Prospect Park, Carlivati and company had to go with a few open-ended stories for the finale to choose from, to make way for the now-suspended new web series.

The OLTL stars were treated like unwanted cattle last week, receiving an impersonal e-mail from TPTB to get the hell out by December 9th. Some of the stars’ tweets about that last clean-up day: “I am awake and dreading today. It is the day I move the last of my stuff from the dressing room and say good by to my family… I will roll my stuff unaided through the audience waiting in line to see the view like a discarded lover when she has been all used up. After 20 years of caring and bleeding for this show. I feel dismissed. Like we are all being told, ‘Move along. Nothing to see here,’” Hillary B. Smith (Nora), and at a dinner with several of the leading ladies, “These women carried me for 18 years during my time at OLTL. Their love and friendship shaped my everyday existence,” Kassie DePaiva (Blair).

Despite several soap bloggers confirming Bree Williamson’s (Jessica) moving on to GH around the same time her bosses go there (January), the actress says it’s news to her. The “only person I'm 'in talks' with is my son about a diaper change... And the deal stinks. [December 5, 2011],” she tweeted.

Maybe ABC Daytime can’t go back and revise OLTL’s ending. But how about a 90-minute reunion movie for both it and AMC later?
