you've been to one but it was called a second hand store or a deep discount store or something else. I had no idea we had such a store (somewhat) nearby until yesterday. I met my neighbor/friend early in the morning to go up to the local library and pick up eclipse glasses for Dad and me, then we went to a local coffee place (the one I haven't been to since it changed ownership--a former co-worker from the bindery had bought the place with his wife and just sold it, though I don't know why). After coffee, my neighbor asked if I'd ever been to the South Side Salvage store in Middlefield. I told her no, she told me we *had* to go...she was driving, so we went <g>.

It was a fascinating experience. They sold groceries along with a few health and beauty products, plus a small selection of children's toys and books, and all the groceries were either a) in damaged packages, b) just about to expire or c) were past the expiration date. Because of that, everything was shockingly cheap. I spent $32...here's what I got...

- Urban Pie mini calzones (package of 12)
- Screamin' Sicilian's pizza roll ups (package of 4), I think
- Nathan's frozen bagel dogs (package of four)
- Nature Valley smokey BBQ nut bars--5 in the box
- Kellogg's trio of crackers
- a box of Triscuits
- a box of uncooked couscous
- a box of Goya quinoa and rice with red bell peppers and garlic
- a container of Stone Oven mini naan
- 2 cans of Campbell's soup
- a can of Heinz curry beans
- a bag of Dove "darkest dark" chocolates
- a single size serving of Tate's chocolate chip cookies
- 3 cans of sparkling water (different brands and flavors)
- family size bag of Old El Paso queso twists
- small can of enchilada sauce
- a pouch of A Dozen Cousins heat and serve Mexican beans
- box of Krusteaz Belgium waffle mix
- box of Dolly Parton's cornbread mix
- bottle of Wishbone Italian dressing
- 2 individual size bags of Garden of Eatin' blue corn chips
- small bottle of face wash
- 2 full size bottles of conditioner
- 1 large tube of a good brand name acrylic paint

The only things I got that had technically expired were the blue corn chips (exp. March 1 of this year) and the Nathan's bagel dogs (exp. late February this year). Everything else was still good. To give you an idea of some of the individual prices...the Nathan's bagel dogs were $2.50. The bottles of conditioner were each $2.00. The bag of Dove chocolates were $1.49. The cans of soup were 59¢ each. The cans of sparkling water were 39¢ each, as was the bag of queso twists. And the individual bags of corn chips and the 5 count box of Nature Valley nut bars? Each a whopping dime.

So far, I've had some of the Dove chocolates, some of the queso twists and some of the quinoa/rice mix. The first two taste fine--very good, in fact--while the last didn't taste BAD but just wasn't to my liking. Best of all, nothing's made me sick <g>.
