able to practice law in NY. He interned at a firm in NYC the summer of '23 and they loved him so much, they offered him a job at the end of his internship. He accepted...but then he decided to spend this year in his home state (NC) while he works to win back a gf that he thinks might be the one. So he's clerking for a judge...but the firm in NYC loves my nephew so much, they're holding a job for him and are (somehow--I don't quite understand it since I'm not a lawyer <g>) counting this year as his first year with THEIR firm.

I would say he was lucky but really, Nephew worked his butt off to get where he is today. It's especially inspiring considering he graduated from college in 2009 with a degree in journalism and despite being an excellent writer*, he was unable to find permanent work in the field. He was adrift for a few years, struggling with some personal challenges that I don't feel it's my place to talk about before finally landing two different law-related jobs (one helping with faux jury selections/trials and one answering phones and helping write documents with a different place) and deciding on a career in law. He was recognized at his graduation from law school for finishing near the top of his class, for having put in hundreds of hours doing pro bono work/giving legal advice to those who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it and for being one of three students who had a paper published in a law review. I couldn't be more proud of the guy!

* he's also co-author of a non-fiction book coming out later about the Greensboro (NC) Massacre of 1979, writing in collaboration with one of his professors.
