My oldest daughter came home for Thanksgiving and today we (my two daughters and I) went looking for a new Christmas tree. Our old one had seen better days.

We looked at Walmart, but weren't thrilled. We'd planned to go to Walmart, Lowe's, then Michaels, and not commit to a new tree if nothing made our hearts sing. Walmart didn't thrill us and certainly turned us off with the prices. One 7.5' tree that we almost could have liked at Walmart was $299. That's a lot for a tree that didn't set my heart racing.

We went to Lowe's next, with my youngest daughter bragging about how wonderful the trees were at Michaels (I could hear the cash registers playing happy tunes.) because she'd gone with a friend and they'd picked out a tree there. We found the last (as in floor display) one and fell in deeeeeeeeeep like with it. The clerks there were very nice. It had no box, so I'm not sure how we'll store it until next year, but the clerk and another guy wrapped it in plastic wrap after he disassembled it. It does come with the instructions, but it's only four pieces, including the power cable that lets you change the way the lights function. It can either do all soft white that just shine, all soft white that flashes, multicolor that flashes, or multicolor that's solid. I'm going with solid white.

The clerk walked us over to the customer service desk to check out and gave us a discount (I'd asked if there was one, since it was the floor model, and he's said, "Sure, we can work that out.") that brought the already discounted tree (still in the throws of Black Friday madness - he'd said that they'd sold 200 on Black Friday and probably sold about 350 altogether.) down from the normal price of $198 to the discount price of $110.99, to a further reduced price of $88.79. The total, after taxes, was $96.38. Not bad for a new tree that will last at least two years according to the warranty, but we'll probably use for the next seven to ten years.

Looking forward to putting it in the corner of the new room after the tile is installed and the final clean up is done. Meanwhile, where to put it? It's currently lounging on the couch...where my oldest daughter is sleeping during her visit. It'll work. Thinking long-term.
