There are countless parents or other family members who have a problem with homosexuality. When my friend came out at 18--25 years ago, his parents kicked him out of the house and told him not to take anything they bought for him. If that wasn't bad enough, they wouldn't let him see his younger siblings. He moved in with a relative in the same town and would see them from time to time and they would cross the street to avoid him. He was so hurt by it he slit his wrists. Thank God he survived. The dad also put out a ultimatum to the rest of the family. He said he would not attend any family functions--including a funeral if his son was invited. The family refused to ostracize my friend. It took a few years before he reconciled with his parents but his dad made a rule the he was never to bring a significant other to his house.
Anywho, I think that Alexis, Sonny and maybe even Kristina could have helped Natalia with her homophobia. Not to the point of embracing it but to the point of acceptance. I believe they tried to soften Natalia but by then, it was too late. They never fully fleshed it out. Was it for religious reasons? And then to introduce Marco and have it be way worse than things were with Blaze--was the nail in the coffin. That was a perfect opportunity to have Natalia show Marco that she learned from her mistakes. As we saw, Natalia and Kristina made peace. She attended the grand re-opening of Charlies and Kristina was happy to see her.
I love to see diversity on soaps and I don't think we've had multiple Latino characters since Carlos and Sabrina. Which reminds me--I always hated the way he said Sah-bree-nah! 🤭
