feast of weenies and beans (in the last few years, we've added diced potatoes as well to the mix), plus I'm going to attempt to make homemade cherry kuchen. Our neighbor made it once for Dad, right before she and her hubby moved to Florida, and he loved it so much, she gave me the recipe. Normally I'd just make him brownies or peanut butter candy (like me, he's not a big fan of cake) but my good church friend presented Dad with a goody bag filled with chocolates yesterday so he's set on sweets made with cocoa for a while <g>.

Incidentally, Dad's first gift today was me sitting patiently and really listening while he soliloquized about all sorts of subjects, for over an hour. Normally I'd try to add to the conversation and he'd tell me something along the lines of "yes, yes, but what I'M talking about is..." or "You've gone beyond my scope of interest", and I'd snap back "It's called 'having a conversation'!" or "well, you covered it and I have nothing to add but related to that..." but today I just smiled and let him ramble.

In other news, in about an hour, I'm taking Dad's sister to the airport. Her birthday is Feb. 3, and her birthday gift to herself every year is a trip somewhere. For a while, she and her kids would go on a cruise or go to an all inclusive resort somewhere in Mexico or another Central American country. But that sort of fizzled out for some reason, so now she usually visits either her son in California or her daughter in Florida; this year, it's the latter. I honestly don't mind taking her to the airport, especially since she usually presses a $20 in my hand and insists I use it for gas or go get myself lunch but...I'm kind of mad at her right now. She and Dad have been clashing a lot the last few years and while I know Dad's not totally innocent in their clashes, I also know my aunt WAY overreacts. She also holds on to grudges for decades. And, you know, he's my dad, so I'm taking his side most of the time <g>. The other day when we were out walking, she said some absolutely awful (and totally untrue) things about Dad and got huffy when I gently tried to refute her. So I'm not looking forward to the 50 minute drive to the airport with her.
